There is a change in the support files: * When processing applets, runjava.bat (used to compile and run Java programs) looks for a .htm file and then a .html file with the same name before creating a default .html file. * The initialization file allows selecting the tools that will be used. You are STRONGLY urged to send comments and problems to the author at brinkje@plu.edu. because this is a beta version. When doing so, please include the version and the revision date in the Help | About box. MultiEd is a programmable text editor that runs under 32 bit Windows operating systems. It is designed especially for programmers and HTML writers. It is copyrighted and all rights are reserved by the author. However, it is available to educational, nonprofit organizations, faculty and students as freeware. The best way to download MultiEd32: Use the URL: http://www.cs.plu.edu/~brink/multied/version2/multied222zip.exe There is an optional thesaurus which can be downloaded from the URL: http://www.cs.plu.edu/~brink/multied/version2/thesaurus.exe. The thesaurus must be exploded and the resulting addict.THR file must be stored in the same directory as the MultiEd32.exe. Additional options and updates may be available from the MultiEd web page: http://www.cs.plu.edu/~brink/multied/version2/MultiEdHomePage.html Where do you want to install MultiEd? By default, MultiEd is installed in the folder C:\MultiEd. You may prefer to install it in C:\Program Files\MultiEd. However, beware that there are some complications: 1. Certain features just may not work in older operating systems such as NT4.0, Windows 95, and Windows 98. 2. The first time you use the spell checker, you will have to "search" for the dictionaries. That is easy. They are in the same folder as MultiEd. The main directory is American.dct and the user directory is default.udt. 3. Storing MultiEd in a subdirectory of "Program files" slightly complicates programming of its programmable tools in Windows 2000 and Windows Me. In the older versions of Windows listed in point 1, it may make programming nearly impossible in certain situations. 4. It may complicate use with some older MS-DOS programs such Masm that cannot handle file or directory names with blanks in them. If you decide to install MultiEd in the "Program files" folder and want to use it for Java, you will need to modify the programming of tools 2 and 3. Using "Options" | "Global Setup" | "Tool 2" change the value of Program name from %multieddir%runjava to "%multieddir%"runjava This is required because the MultiEd directory name contains a blank. Repeat this process for "Tool 3" and save the result. To install MultiEd32 2.22: 0. If you installed any version of MultiEd older than 2.0, please uninstall it first. Just delete the C:\MultiEd directory and the files LEdit32.dll MultiEd.ini from your windows directory if they exist. Version 2.0 and higher can be removed by deleting its directory. 1. Download multiedzip.exe and optionally thesaurus.exe. 2. Execute the multied222zip.exe file. By default, it will put the files in C:\MultiEd. Please see the discussion above if you prefer a different directory. 3. The ToolSetup program is automatically run. Select the tools buttons that you will find useful. In particular, Select the button(s) for your browser(s). You can remove Java and/or MASM buttons if you don't use those languages. 4. When you close the ToolSetup program, MultiEd will automatically load. Look at the TourMultiEd.txt file that should be loaded into the editor in order to familiarize yourself with MultiEd's features. 5. Optional: Execute the thesaurus.exe file making sure that the included file is stored in the same directory as MultiEd32.exe. 6. Test MultiEd by clicking on C:\MultiEd\MultiEd32.exe or its shortcut. Open some of the Example files in the C:\MultiEd\Examples directory. Check to see that files are properly colored. Try clicking the project tool button and open the C:\MultiEd\ExampleProject\ShapeDemo.proj and/or C:\MultiEd\Example\Example-Project.proj Then click on some of the files in its window. While the project is open, check to make sure that "Project | Show Tree". is checked. If you have trouble with .java or .asm files, you will need to customize runjava.bat or mlbat.bat to specify the location of the Java or Masm directory. 7. Take time to read some of the help files - especially the items on New Features and "What is a project?" 8. You may need/want to setup some of the programmable tools buttons. See the Help item "Initial Setup". Use the menu item Options | Global setup. The webpage http://www.cs.plu.edu/~brink/multied/version2/CustomTools.html contains some suggestion for programming tool buttons. To uninstall this version, just delete the C:\MultiEd directory (or the directory in which MultiEd is installed) and any desktop icons or start menu items that reference MultiEd. All files are in C:\MultiEd directory and MultiEd does not use the registry. Installation of MultiEd files in computer labs: MultiEd has some features that make a "read-only" installation feasible. It is even possible to allow users to customize their own private initialization files. See help on Custom Initialization. In case there are comments, questions or problems, **please** contact brinkje@plu.edu. Please include the version and the date in the About box. Thank you for using MultiEd.
